We miss your Funny Faces! Please join the Coney Island Museum — on Zoom — for Once Upon a Time in Coney Island, a salon-like evening of readings, stories, performances, and memories that capture the heart and soul of the People’s Playground. Hosted by the inimitable Adam Realman, our Museum benefit will feature luminaries including Neil Gaiman, Alice Hoffman, Kevin Baker, Bill Griffith, Todd Robbins, Richard Eagan, Trav SD, and others to be announced. Amid the chaos and strife that defined 2020, this special event is an easy escape into the wonders of Coney Island. Apart but together, we’ll focus on what makes this place so magical … and with your generous support, begin the next chapter in its spectacular story.

Nancy Bilyeau - Author - Dreamland

New York historical fiction author and magazine editor Nancy Bilyeau will discuss the history of the turn of the century Coney Island amusement park Dreamland, with the help of original photographs and postcards, and how she made use of its dramatic story in her new novel, 'Dreamland,' which was praised in Publishers Weekly: "Bilyeau populates her story with achingly believable, realistically flawed characters. This fascinating portrait of the end of the Gilded Age deserves a wide audience."

One of the book's themes is the stark difference between the amusement parks in 1911, which were dubbed "Sodom by the Sea," and the luxury hotels less than a mile away in present day Manhattan Beach, which were visited by the cream of Edwardian Society in Europe as well as such Americans as Thomas Edison and Henry Ford. A reading from the book will be included as well as Q&A.

Aaron Smith - Author - Circus Jerks

Aaron Smith is a journalist, thru-hiker, ex-circus barker and former roustabout. As a teenage metalhead in the 1980s, he ran away from home (walked actually - 2,150 miles from Georgia to Maine) and joined the circus. He lived on a train, which caught fire one night as it traveled to its next destination. An alligator escaped during a live show. An elephant tried to trunk him from a moving train. His incredible adventures with Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus, as well as the Big Apple Circus, go on and on.

Populated with clowns, dancing girls, Soviet bear trainers (with their bears), scalawags, elephants, and dung shovelers, Circus Jerks is a rare behind-the-scenes look at America’s fascinating circus culture, which is fast receding into history.

Circus Jerks available to purchase here.

Tickets are $5 and can be purchased here.
