Ask The Experts: Todd Robbins - Live on Zoom, This Wednesday, October 27, 7pm, ET!
"The Dark Side of Coney Island"
Just in time for Halloween, long-time Coney Island stalwart Todd Robbins will regale us with true sinister stories of murder and mayhem in fun-loving Coney Island. On October 27th, you will hear tales of the public execution of a murderer, a contemporary gang assassination and vendetta, a deadly assault at Steeplechase Amusement Park, The “accidental” death of a snitch, a mysterious disappearance of a well-known New Yorker and the possible solution to that mystery found under the boardwalk, and the rise and bloody fall of an old-time mob boss.
Todd Robbins is an award-winning performer and creative artist that has worked in many areas of popular entertainment and the performing arts during a forty-year career. Todd has been on more than 200 TV shows, and recently was seen hosting his True Nightmares TV series for the Investigation Discovery Channel.
Classically trained as an actor at the American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco, he has put his performing abilities to good use in the two Drama Desk nominated theater pieces that he created for off-Broadway. The first one, Carnival Knowledge, is a behind the scenes look at the world of the American sideshow and chronicled his experiences working in places like Coney Island. The second show is Play Dead. which he wrote with Teller (of Penn & Teller). Teller also directed this acclaimed production. Todd reprised his role in Play Dead at the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles, and also created and starred in The Charlatan’s Séance at the Two River Theatre in Red Bank, NJ. Most recently, Todd just finished an extended run at the SoHo Playhouse of his controversial necromantic show, Haunt Quest. Todd is one of the producers of NY’s longest running magic show, Monday Night Magic, now in its 25th season, and is a partner in the show’s parent company, Magical Nights Inc.
Todd is currently working on several projects with the producers of Sleep No More. The first project is Speakeasy Magic, an ongoing series of performances at the McKittrick Hotel featuring an ensemble of the best close-up magicians in NYC, now in its third year of performances. Upcoming will be a new immersive theater show called Life & Trust. And there is a rumor that Todd also has a secret séance room hidden somewhere within the McKittrick. Also upcoming is a new magical cocktail lounge in Bushwick, with a permanent magic/variety/burlesque show that Todd is developing this with Austin McCormick and his Company XIV (Nutcracker Rouge).
As an authority in many areas of arcane popular culture, Todd has been called upon to be a talking head on countless TV programs, and to provide commentary on the DVDs of Tod Browning’s Freaks and the 1947 noir classic Nightmare Alley. Todd’s podcast Abnormalcy features Todd telling true twisted stories of murder and mayhem. For more about this go to abnormalcypodcast.com. Join Dick Zigun and Paul Zaloom as they discuss Tricks & Treats at the Wax Musee. This 1981 event launched CIUSA, and was a Halloween celebration of Coney Island's World in Wax, which was the oldest wax museum in the country at the time. The show featured art installations, dance, music, film, performance art, and puppets.
The original twelve-hour event was organized by Zigun, who is CIUSA's founder and artistic director, and the show opened with object performance from Zaloom, who by that time had already made strides in his prolific puppet career.
Other featured performers included Charles Ludlam of the Ridiculous Theatrical Company, the Polar Bear Club, and Lille Santangelo, the then 80-year-old founder of World in Wax.
If you are a fan of CIUSA, this is not to be missed!
